Submitting your work online

Digital submissions can have many benefits for students and staff. However, we recognize that it can bring its own set of challenges. In this guide, we will address the most common ways your tutor will ask you to submit work and show you how. We also recommend you take a look at the other guides in this section, such as how to compress PDFs. These will also help you when it comes to submitting your work online.

Introduction to submitting your work online

There are two tools that we can use to collect work that integrate with Moodle. The first is Turnitin, and the second is Moodle assignment. Both have slightly different purpose. If you are unsure which one you are submitting to you can check the icon of the submission area you are about to use. We are highlighting this because their interfaces are slightly different.

We use Turnitin for text-based assignments. It is a tool that you and your tutors can use to check for plagiarism. Turnitin accepts .doc and .pdf files. You can skip to our Turnitin section below if you know this is where you will be submitting your work.

We use Moodle assignment for other types of work, such as visual, audio and video work. This is because it accepts a range of file types. Please remember, you must check what type of files your tutors want you to submit. You can skip to our Moodle assignment section below if you know this is where you will be submitting work.

Checking your file size

There is no exact answer as to how large your file should be. Usually, the maximum file size that can be uploaded via Moodle is 100MB. However, this may vary, so please check your Key Unit Information (KUI). In most cases we expect your file will be substantially smaller, unless you are submitting video materials.

The time it takes you to upload your work will depend on the size of your file and your internet connection. Upload speends may vary, and your internet connections can fluctuate. Upload speeds are generally much slower than download speeds. The larger the file size the longer it will take to upload. You should always allow plenty of time to upload your file.

In any case, we strongly recommend you compress your files before you try and upload them. You can find guidance on how to do this here on the Digital Learning website. Often files can be reduced in size very quickly and with no noticeable difference in the quality on display. Sometimes reducing the file size can improve the document, as your computer will spend less time loading larger images.

If you have large video files you will need to find appropriate video hosting platforms. However, we do not recommend YouTube for this purpose. Please see our guidance on hosting your videos in Panopto.
